The story revolves around Amar (Akshay Kumar), a man with a heart of gold who leads an idyllic life in London but has to return to his native village when he loses his job unexpectedly. Amar encounters both his childhood sweetheart Sanam (Twinkle Khanna) and Goonga (Jagdeep), a man his father has promised to give Sanam's hand to. What follows is a roller coaster ride of twists and turns as Amar discovers that really it's love unconditional which can heal humanity irrespective of their social, economic or geographical status. Amar lives in London with his friend, Dheeraj and girlfriend Anita, who gets pregnant and decides to break up with him. He decides to return to his village so he can be with his father, Dulari, his mother who is suffering from an unknown disease. There he finds Sanam, a girl he loved when they were young. He also meets Goonga, who wants Sanam's hand in marriage. Ameer tells his father that instead of giving Goonga Sanam's hand in marriage, he will marry her himself. Dulari is pleased with the decision and marries the two. As Sanam starts living with Amarnath comes to know that she has become handicapped after an accident. She has no memory of the accident or what happened before it. Amar who loves her deeply continues to love her until she can remember. After some time she does start to remember but never talks about the accident. Amar is happy with her love for him and letting go of the accident. Meanwhile, Amar's friend, Dheeraj comes to know that his father is suffering from paralysis and has no money to pay for his wife's cancer operation. He asks Amar to give up his job in London so he can take care of the family. Amar agrees but only on condition that he can marry Sanam soon after they get back. Sanam agrees too with condition that she has to be able to help her mother in the village as helping her takes a lot of work from her own health condition. Amar submits his resignation at his office and returns to the village. He meets Sanam's father who says the money for Dheeraj's wife's operation has been received but can't be withdrawn as it is still in escrow. Amar agrees to take up performing in the village for seven years if he manages to get Sanam married by his 7th year birthday.
